Moscow Under Heated Glass…

Russian Fire Hydrants Look Kinda Like This…

We had in Moscow a large panel of glass (3×4 meters) from a tall building break and fall to the street below today. No one was hurt as far as I can tell but it was caused by expansion from the heat. This is an example of what the heat is doing to Moscow…

When your world is 10 to 15 degrees Celsius cooler on average things like roads melting and glass in skyscrapers cracking is not an issue. But now that Moscow has reached an equilibrium of temperatures  similar to the Midwest of America, Moscow is suffering from new phenomenons…

Moscow has water trucks wetting the streets down to keep the asphalt from melting. The fountains have been kept literally over flowing with fresh water and many people are working short work days due to lack of air conditioning in businesses.

I am not sure about the melting asphalt situation because I never remember anyone washing the streets down in Kansas City because of the super heated days?

One thing that Muscovite’s do not have, the privilege of doing like we did in America , That is to open up the fire hydrant and lets the kids play… (Even if against the law…)

In Moscow the fire hydrants are under man hole covers on the side of the street. Sometimes in the sidewalks, sometimes in the grass. They are not very noticeable but they are there and if you pull the lid off you find that you are missing the hydrant to turn on the water.

So the children of Moscow have never had that against the law pleasure of playing in a super stream of water from a fire hydrant. That stream of water that literally flooded the whole neighborhood with cool and fun water…

American Fire Hydrant...

I remember the greatest summer when the county had installed fire hydrants out in the country side for future development of an industrial park. Now I could of cared less about an industrial park but when I discovered that a fire hydrant was dripping water a mile down the road and no one was around for miles to watch what I was doing. I was able to get a huge pipe wrench from the barn and I had the most wonderful time until discovered several weeks later…

But I was the coolest kid around for weeks…
